Rocket League was and is an absolute hit in the gaming world, in many ways a game in a league of its own and on some level a crazy evolution of PONG. This game really throws you back into what gaming is about.
There is excitement, competition and a sense of limitless possibilities that come with the game. The rocket powered cars turn from being clunky battering rams in the hands of new players into graceful flying machines by those at the top and it is that rocket power that is the defining feature of this game. It is what drive the innovations, the freestyling and the feeling of being in precise control of the car and the ball, what players call being “mechanical”.
For me though, that isn’t the sole reason this game is very high on my all times favourites and why I have nearly 800 hours played, the reason I love this game so much is that it is more like a sport than any video game I’ve ever played.
I find a lot of eSports dull to watch but sports like Football (soccer for my American friends) I can watch and enjoy easily and I find the same with rocket league. There is an element of real skill in Rocket League and it really shines throughout any level but the top level especially. The actual players have techniques, strengths and weaknesses, not their in-game avatars. The car itself isn’t really a factor in the gameplay, it is more whether you can counter the opposing player, you win and lose based on your skill not on the “meta” or counters or anything like what you see in League of Legends and other coveted eSports.
The game gets described as arcade-y but that’s the aesthetic and charm of it, yet the graphics don’t really matter in the end, although there’s plenty of different arenas and settings to play in. The soundtrack is very good for a game with new songs being added to the in-game playlist all the time and I’m sure veteran players all have their own nostalgic favourites. But really the star of the show is the gameplay and that’s the way it should be, it is refreshing with a technical difficultly you just don’t find in other games anymore, every button has a purpose and the car becomes more responsive and crisp over time as you master the controls, begin to start taking aerial shots and jump off walls, it will really blow your mind as to what the car can do.
Should you play Rocket League in 2021?
Absolutely. Whether you are a complete beginner or returning to the game I think this is a must-play for everyone. It won’t be everybody’s cup of tea and that’s okay but you can still enjoy this game at any level. I must warn you though if you get bitten by the Rocket League bug it can be a frustrating rollercoaster to climb the rankings and improve, it takes on average 600 hours of play to reach Champion rank.
I would recommend playing this with 1 or 2 friends and playing together from the start if you can so you can enjoy the game together and really add a level of teamwork to the gameplay which isn’t always there in solo queue. And ultimately if you are playing in the lowest rung of casual or the lofty Grand Champion heights of ranked you can always have fun, its just about your attitude to the game.
